In the first week of April, the Black Watch Battalion ACF 3‑star training cadets took part in an immersive 2‑day, 1‑night Adventure Camp designed to push their skills, confidence and teamwork to new heights. Set against the backdrop of the Scottish outdoors, the exercise gave cadets the chance to step away from the classroom and put their fieldcraft knowledge into real practice.
Across the two days, cadets rotated through a series of hands‑on training sessions, developing essential outdoor and survival skills. They learned how to construct both natural and man‑made shelters, experimented with different fire‑lighting techniques, and practised water filtration methods to ensure safe drinking water in the field. Cadets also created detailed location action plans and took part in whittling sessions, building fine‑motor skills, patience and attention to detail.
The exercise culminated in a final challenge that brought everything together. Working in teams, cadets were tasked with applying their newly honed skills under pressure – testing their resilience, communication and problem‑solving as they navigated a realistic scenario. The challenge demanded cooperation, adaptability and determination, and every cadet rose to the occasion.
It was a brilliant effort from all involved, showcasing the value of practical training in developing confident, capable young people. Experiences like this not only build fieldcraft competence but also strengthen leadership, teamwork and self-belief—qualities that stay with cadets long after the exercise ends.
