To make sure you choose the right course we have introduced a difficulty rating based on the physical and mental challenges on our courses.  This is explained below.

“Courses with this rating are suitable for all. There is a small amount of physical hardship with a small amount of walking.”

“Courses with this rating are suitable for all. There is a reasonable amount of walking and some forms of physical output.”

“Courses with this rating are suitable for 16+. There is a significant amount of physical output, perhaps over a number of days. Time may be spent overnight in poor weather with minimum equipment. A certain amount of mental robustness is needed to complete.”

“Courses with this rating are suitable for 18+. There is significant physical output sometimes over multi-day, and often in Hostile habitats i.e high mountains etc. Equipment/food may be stripped back (if woodland based) or large rucksacks carried (if mountain based). Temperatures may be sub-zero or excessively high. A good level of mental robustness is needed. Special attention should be given to the kit lists available.”

“Courses with this rating are suitable for 18+. There is sustained physical output over multi-days, potentially carrying up to 40lbs, often in high/mountain terrain. Long “hill days” may be necessary, for this reason a good level of fitness is needed. Weather and temperatures are likely to be sub-zero or excessively high. Special attention should be given to kit lists available.”

8 Hour Foraging Course £100

The Overview for the 8 Hour Foraging Course includes the following:

Learn the pleasures and pitfalls of wild foraging

One of our favorite parts of the multi-day courses are the wild foragable lessons.  There’s nothing more satisfying than being able to identify flora and tree’s and understand the multiple uses attributed to each of them. For this reason for the 2018 season we are offering a full day of plant and tree I.D.

These courses are run from April into October. As you can imagine Spring, summer and Autumn all bring their own wild foragables with them. For those who are interested in plant I.D, we’d recommend the summer months, and for those more interested in fruits and fungi the Autumn months.

The Itinerary for the 8 Hour Foraging Course includes the following:

Please be aware that what we find on these courses are very much dependant on the season.  For those interested in Plants, then a spring/summer course date should be booked.  For those interested in berries, fruits and Fungi then Autumn courses are optimum.

  • Wild Edibles – Plants, Fungi, Berries, Trees, Lichens.  What is safe to eat, and more importantly what isn’t.
  • Medicinal and Herbal Identification
  • Tree identification by leaves, bark and buds.
  • Cordage making from various plant/tree

For learning purposes, all attendees should come prepared with a notebook and/or camera.

Three Day Multi-environment Survival Course £210.00

The Overview for the Three Day Multi-environment Survival Course includes the following:

The multi-day course is multi-environment. A Group moving from one camp to another

Due to the prolonged time out in the wilderness, weather factors and the long hours spent learning, a good level of physical fitness and mental stamina is required.

This course is run in areas where there is no one for miles around, typically starting within a woodland environment and working up to the mountainous regions. We are true believers that Survival is a dynamic subject, and for this reason the 3 Day Course is run in multi-environments. You can expect to find yourself in mature Caledonia pine forests, at the top of hills and making your way down gorges and river crossings.

Where we primarily focus on Survival, there is adequate time to brush up on your “Bushcraft” skills, as these techniques compliment survival and provide added levels of comfort to your experience . For more information on Course content be sure to click “Itinerary”.

You may be interested to know that we can offer an IOL award on our 3 day courses. Backcountry Survival courses are accredited by the IOL to Train and assess individuals and instructors who are looking to gain formal recognition within the Survival field.
