Backcountry Survival Ltd can offer young people course that encourages boundaries to be pushed, that enable personal development in knowledge as well as various other areas such as team-work, confidence and self-esteem. A strengthened understanding of the outdoors and how to treat it will be gained. The training provided in Bushcraft and Survival allows young people to work in and enjoy the outdoors, which we believe encourages a positive mindset.

It is our mission to encourage and develop young people in the experiences and opportunities we provide through Bushcraft and Survival Training.

John Muir Discovery Award £

The Overview for the John Muir Discovery Award includes the following:


Backcountry Survival Ltd are proud providers of the John Muir Discovery Award.

What is the John Muir Discovery Award?

“The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It supports people to connect with, enjoy and care for nature, landscape, and the
natural environment – wild places.”

What time do you have to commit?

To complete the John Muir Discovery Award you have to do 4 days or 25hrs+.

What do you have to do?

To achieve a John Muir Award, each participant must

  • Meet four Challenges – Discover, Explore, Conserve, Share.
  • Complete the required minimum time commitment
  • Show enthusiasm and commitment towards their involvement.
  • Have an awareness of John Muir.
  • Understand what the John Muir Award is and why they are participating.

The four challenges could see individuals:

Discover a wild space.

Explore their wild space.

Conserve their wild space.

Share their wild space.

The four challenges will have participants not only develop their knowledge about the great outdoors but also provide them with hands on experience with conserving and protecting nature. Alongside this, participants will also be taught bushcraft and survival skills.

Survival Mission – 11-17 Year Olds £50.00

The Overview for the Survival Mission – 11-17 Year Olds includes the following:


Our Survival Mission’s aimed for 11-17 year old run during school holidays and are based at our sites in Murthly, Perthshire and Alvie near Kincraig. It is half a day of learning bushcraft and survival skills and putting them to practice.

The course will cover various survival and bushcraft lessons alongside team building challenges, some of the things covered may be:

  • Basic Navigation
  • Fire
  • First Aid
  • Whittling with Knives
  • Water Filters
  • Shelters
  • Team Building Challenges

On completion of all activities participants will be awarded the National Outdoor Learning Award.

If a young person has attended a previous Survival Mission with us and has achieved their National Outdoor Learning Award, they can return and start working towards the Releasing Potential Forest School Award. This award will see young people work towards achieving badges for Fire Skills, Tool Skills, Shelter Building, Woodland Cooking, Nature Observer, Environmental Skills and Woodland Craft Skills.

Please note as certain criteria has to be met only a badge or two will be potentially awarded per course.

Family Bushcraft and Survival Courses £50.00

The Overview for the Family Bushcraft and Survival Courses includes the following:


Family Bushcraft and Survival Courses are open to all. Come and spend half a day learning bushcraft skills and putting them to practice.

The course will cover various survival and bushcraft lessons, some of the things covered may be:

  • Basic Navigation
  • Shelters
  • Fire
  • Water Filters
  • Knife Work
  • First Aid

Dates:

Saturday 9th October – 10am – 3pm @ Alvie Estate (min spaces: 4)

Friday 22nd October – 10am – 3pm @ Alvie Estate (min spaces: 4)
